Three Recipes

Everyone has their own recipe. Since I couldn’t figure out the “best” or the “truest” recipe I’m giving you three to choose from.

Recipe #1

The first recipe comes from my farmor, my paternal grandmother. This is the version she made for all her big Christmas parties. I never tried it, as it is alcoholic, and by the time I was old enough to have alcohol she had stopped making it as our Christmas parties had gotten much smaller and the recipe makes a fairly large batch.

Recipe #2

The second version is from my long time friend and certified Swede, Daniel. Over the summer he and I were discussing my plan for 12 Days of Christmas 2023. We used to work together in the first bakery I worked at in Stockholm and he is an accomplished baker. I really value his opinion on all things baking and pastry.

When I described my grandmother’s mumma recipe he was aghast! “That’s not at all right!” was his opinion. He shared his family’s version and that is the recipe I have passed on to you all down below.

Recipe #3

The third version is the simplest and my personal favorite. This is the version I was taught when I first came to Sweden. Just two ingredients mixed together and BAM! You’re drinking! What could be better than that?

Julmust

Julmust is Swedish Christmas soda. While hard to describe exactly it has flavors of malt, hops and spices. The best replacements would be root beer or Dr. Pepper.

Julbryggd Öl

Julbryggd öl is Swedish Christmas Beer. Most Swedish breweries brew their own version every holiday season. It’s usually fairly heavy and dark, malty and sometimes spiced.

Beer??

If you’re wondering what type of beer to use for the top two recipes the answer is whatever beer you like best. No clarification was ever given to me about what beers should be used. Do whatever you want and make your own version of Mumma: Christmas Punch. There are no rules.
